What's News

What's new in the book world?
  • HarperCollins no longer to accept returns from retailers ... no advances paid to authors.

As reported in the Wall Street Journal, marking a radical departure from traditional book-publishing practices, HarperCollins Publishers says it will launch a new book imprint that won't accept returns from retailers and will pay little or no advances to authors.

This further erodes the differences between traditional publishing and small, indie presses like Elderberry. The distinctions are blurring so fast the mind boggles. Inquiring minds want to know:  Will HarperCollins now be branded a vanity press?

  • Elderberry authors now blogging on amazon

Our cutting edge authors are now offering their opinions, response to reviews and news about their books and areas of expertise on their amazon book pages.
  • A new way to target small press book buyers

5000 color brochures featuring each new book will now be inserted into every book order going out from Book Clearing House, our 800 number order line. This targets exactly the readers who buy books from small presses like ours, readers who don't hesitate to buy books by new authors---lean mean marketing at its best.

  • Top Periodicals charge $5000 for book review

Today I was speaking with an ad exec from one of the best known papers out of Washington DC and he assured me that, excepting ex-presidents and rock stars, a book review in any large magazine or newspaper is what he called a "billable event," meaning that unless a check for $5000 or more accompanies the book review request, no review will appear. To those of us in the business this is no surprise, but to new writers, the ugly realities of the publishing business can be discouraging.

  • Army Magazine raves about Elderberry book

The author of Gasoline To Patton, General Albin Irzyk, has received high praise for his military history from The Department of the Army's official magazine: Army. Kudos go out to the general, whose book describes how incompetence and politics delayed the end of WWII and cost tens of thousands of lives.
